Vishal Shah

Chief Executive Officer (NRT)

As Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) and MashinaniWORKS, Vishal Shah provides strategic leadership to one of Africa’s leading community conservancy networks. He is responsible for driving organizational vision and execution, aligning a diverse ecosystem of stakeholders, and strengthening partnerships with communities, government, and global donors.

Vishal’s leadership is anchored in NRT’s core pillars; community-led conservation, strong governance, sustainable livelihoods, peace and security, and climate resilience. He is deeply committed to advancing models where communities are at the center of decision-making, ensuring that conservation delivers tangible social and economic value while protecting critical ecosystems.

Under his leadership, NRT continues to strengthen community institutions, support accountable governance structures, and expand livelihood opportunities across pastoral landscapes. He champions approaches that integrate conservation with enterprise ranging from tourism to innovative climate solutions such as large-scale rangelands carbon projects, positioning communities not just as beneficiaries, but as owners and drivers of sustainable development.

Vishal is particularly passionate about unlocking long-term, sustainable financing for conservation and community development. He has been instrumental in advancing initiatives that connect global climate action with local impact, ensuring that communities in northern Kenya are meaningfully included in emerging carbon markets and nature-based solutions.

He brings a unique blend of global business expertise and entrepreneurial experience. He began his career as a Management Consultant with DiamondCluster (now part of PwC) and later worked as a Brand Manager with Campbell Soup Company in the United States. Prior to joining MashinaniWORKS, Vishal founded and scaled a breakfast cereal brand, Fit, which he successfully exited through a sale to a larger company after six years.

Vishal holds a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Computer Science) and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, with a concentration in Finance, from the University of Pennsylvania.
