the Social Ministry Research Network (SOMIRENEC) in collaboration with Tangaza University College held a successful peace caravan whose theme was ‘Kudumisha Amani Wakati wa Uchaguzi ni Jukumu Letu’, (‘Maintaining Peace during the General Elections is our Responsibility’).

At the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), our member community conservancies are spearheading transformative environmental change across northern and coastal Kenya.

Through the structure, women in northern and coastal Kenya will now have opportunities to take up leadership roles and influence decision-making processes concerning local natural resources, community development, and governance.

NRT established CLF in 2015 to empower indigenous communities in identifying, planning, and implementing their own development programs. To date, CLF has funded 162 projects across all NRT member conservancies.

In early 2021, the Ishaqbini Hirola Sanctuary had approximately 140 hirola individuals marking a 190% rise in hirola numbers since its establishment. In the same year, 64 hirola were re-wilded into the Conservancy’s expanse to ease population pressure in the Sanctuary.

Believed to be the world's most trafficked mammal, the pangolin accounts for up to 20% of all illegal wildlife trading.

Loijipu's natural mother abandoned him 48 hours after his birth in February 2017, when a team of researchers went too close to the pair and frightened them. Sera Community Conservancy, where this incident occurred, entrusted Loijipu to the care of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Namunyak Community Conservancy until 2018, when he matured and was translocated back to Sera.

Thanks to the valiant efforts of Lkilayio and his team, Sera Rhino Sanctuary’s black rhinos have a bright future, and Sera Community Conservancy is pioneering the community-driven conservation of species on the verge of extinction in East Africa and possibly all of Africa.

Hunting and poaching drastically reduced the population over the years, and the 2016 Great Grevy census results indicated that Kenya was home to 2,350 Grevy zebras, 90 percent of the world’s population.

Since its launch by NRT in February 2020, the Clean Energy Project has revolutionized life for northern Kenya communities and reduced the pressure on shrinking forest habitats caused by charcoal and firewood harvesting.

In February 2022, 15 elephants were collared from Kidepo Valley National Park, through northeastern Uganda, into Kenya’s West Pokot and Nasolot areas.

Ujuzi Manyattani is a vocational training delivery model that aims to give alternative livelihoods to indigenous communities in NRT-member conservancies, encourage entrepreneurship, and break poverty and conflict cycles.

This new partnership will drive the socio-economic development of the participating NRT community conservancies by ensuring the curricula offered in the chosen trades are current and relevant in the face of rapidly changing industry dynamics and technological advancements.

NRT and its member community conservancies are transforming lives, promoting peace, and conserving natural resources, thanks to USAID’s funding, and the delegation was enamored with the work they are doing.

Despite a low PIKE (Proportion of Illegally Killed Elephants) of 25%, 2021 had higher mortalities than 2009, which was also a similar drought year.

According to collared data, elephants have expanded their range and are utilising the Lorian swamp in the East, with herds moving further down the lower Ewaso river and more regular movement between Marsabit and Meru National Parks.
