Four Governors Endorse New EU Kenya RangER Programme

The European Union (EU) funded Kenya Rangelands Ecosystem Services Productivity (RangER) Programme has received support from four County Governments under the Amaya Triangle Initiative (ATI).

This new initiative seeks to eradicate poverty through enhancing the productivity of ecosystem services provided by rangelands for food-feed-human-and-wildlife security in the Amaya Triangle counties of Laikipia, Samburu, Isiolo and Baringo.

The programme’s objectives is set to be achieved through enhancing the capacity of Amaya counties in governance, peace and security for both wildlife and people.

Governors Ndiritu Muriithi (Laikipia), Moses Lenolkulal (Samburu), Stanley Kiptis (Baringo) and Isiolo Deputy Governor Dr. Abdi Issa together with the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) CEO Tom Lalampaa jointly endorsed the implementation the program in their counties.

A consortium of four counties and five technical partners among them E4Impact, World Agroforestry (ICRAF), Community Safety Initiative (CSI), Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and ATI will execute the three-year project with NRT as a lead agency.

The program which works through the community conservancies model also seeks to enhance value chains for pasture and feed, identify viable commercial opportunities for natural resource-based enterprises and is set to work with communities to introduce different agroforestry and afforestation/reforestation options for feed-and food- security.

“We’re committed to working closely with the county governments to realise the project’s goals on poverty reduction and improved livelihoods,” says Tom Lalampaa, NRT CEO.

Governor Lenolkulal, the new ATI chairperson echoed the initiative saying priority areas will focus on water, livestock, peace and security, infrastructure development, farming, and tourism which will improve livelihoods.
