Women Unite! Marching across the Ewaso River for Peace
Women have a critical role to play in peace. They are the eyes and ears of their villages. It is they who lose sons to deadly conflict, and it is they who can be powerful forces for change and non-violent conflict resolution if they have the right tools and feel empowered. In early October, hundreds of women from different communities marched from Isiolo to Samburu County across the Ewaso River, raising awareness and support for promoting peace, and inspiring other women to get involved. NRT’s peace coordinator Josphine Ekiru was at the forefront, alongside Samburu County Commissioner John Korir and others. Melita Oletenges reports for NTV:
When conflict, mainly fuelled by cattle rustling and battle for natural resources rages among neighbouring pastoralist communities in Isiolo and Samburu Counties, culture relegate women to silence. All the while, they, and their children, suffer the most when the men go to war.
