Sarara Tented Camp

Location
Nestled into the foothills of the Mathews range lies the peaceful Sarara Camp looking out across the spectacular landscape of northern Kenya. Located in the 75,000 ha area managed by Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust, Sarara has its own core conservation area providing a critical refuge for wildlife during the dry season and offering its guests an intimate wildlife experience. Owned by the Trust, and jointly managed, Sarara is a venture dedicated to wildlife conservation and community development.
Facilities
Sarara has five spacious, carefully positioned luxury double tents, with open-air bathrooms and private verandas. The sitting and dining area with its open air deck looks out over the natural rock swimming pool. Just below the pool is a waterhole for wildlife where wildlife including elephants, kudu and leopard come to drink.
Sarara is managed and hosted by Piers and Hilary Bastard, of Acacia Trails, Leaders in Exclusive & Luxury Safaris, Community Conservation Initiatives and Caring Eco-Tourism. A team of Samburu staff help look after guests at Sarara and provide excellent guided walks in the bush.
Activities
Namunyak is a truly unspoilt wilderness area with few roads. The emphasis is mainly on walking excursions, with an expert local field scout. From hiking into the Mathews rainforest to see its diversity of birds, butterflies and plants, to climbing the sacred mountain of Ololokwe with donkeys, Sarara has a unique experience for every visitor.
Sarara also offers fly camping with camels along the wide sandy ‘luggas’, bush dinners under the stars, and visits to the ‘singing wells’ in the dry season, where Samburu herdsmen sing to their cattle as they bucket water into troughs from deeply dug wells.
Game bird hunting is also available seasonally.
How to Book
Sarara is closed during the rainy months of April, May and November.
Access to Sarara is by private charter to the Sarara airstrip, by daily scheduled flight from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to Samburu followed by road transfer, or by private 4 wheel drive vehicle.
