Il Ngwesi Lodge

Location
Il Ngwesi Lodge lies adjacent to the Ngare Ndare River on the edge of the Mukogodo Hills with commanding panoramic views across Northern Kenya. It is community-owned and managed by the Laikipiak Maasai who will host your stay.
Il Ngwesi Lodge which opened in 1996, was a recipient of the prestigious British Airways Best Eco-tourism Destination Award in 1997, Best Self-catering Camp by readers of Travel Magazine twice, Kenya’s leading travel magazine and The Equator Initiative Award at the world Summit in Johannesburg in 2002. It has also become the role model for upcoming community eco-lodges throughout the East African region
Facilities
The lodge is constructed with materials from the local area and comprises six individual `bandas’ (cottages), which all have adjoining open air showers. They are thatched, open plan and on high supports to fully ensure both fantastic views and privacy. Two of the bandas have a platform where you can roll out the double bed and spend the night under the stars.
There is also a large sitting area where you can enjoy breakfast in the trees and dinner under the stars. Cool off in the infinity swimming pool which also makes an ideal lunch venue. A covered viewing hide overlooking a waterhole allows guests to experience the wildlife up close. Water comes from a spring and then is gravity fed to the lodge. Hot water and electricity are powered by solar systems.
Activities
There is a diverse range of activities. Visits to Il Ngwesi’s Cultural Boma are unique because the experience provides a genuine exposure to how the Maasai really live. Exploring the area by foot, or by camel, following the Ngare Ndare River with local guides, offers a special opportunity to get close to the wildlife.
Less strenuous activities include a game drive and taking sundowners to one of the many different vantage points along the Mukogodo Hills. Bush breakfasts and dinners are also available. Il Ngwesi is also home to the hand-reared orphan black rhino, Omni. He is the first black rhino to come back to Il Ngwesi in 30 years and with two white rhinos, is now a daily sight for lodge visitors. There is also a habituated baboon troop where guests can closely observe these fascinating primates.
