Danish Ambassador Visits Westgate

On the 27th of July 2016, Mette Knudsen, the Danish Ambassador to Kenya, visited Westgate Conservancy. The Danish International Development Agency, DANIDA, is one of NRT's principal donors and the Ambassadors visit was a celebration of longterm support and partnership. It was also an opportunity for Ms. Knudsen to award certificates to morans graduating from the Moran Economic Empowerment Programme - which DANIDA has been an instrumental part of through their core programme support.

When she was appointed Danish Ambassador to Kenya in September 2015, Ambassador Knudsen stated that one of her top priorities was supporting development in line with Kenya’s Vision 2030.

“Our close and strong partnership [with Kenya] goes back to the first year of Independence. This year we expect to sign an agreement with Kenya on the largest Danish grant in these more than 50 years of development cooperation. Our country programme for the next five years will support Kenya in implementation of Vision 2030 in the areas of Inclusive Green Growth and Employment; Health and Governance.”

As the graduating morans celebrated the theme of the day - Promoting Peace Through Entrepreneurship - the Danish Ambassador expressed her appreciation of the good work that the Conservancy was and is doing to empower both women and young men.

She requested the morans to be disciplined in using the business loans their graduation gave them access to. She also oversaw the contribution of the Westgate women beaders to the Conservancy - and urged the ladies to keep up the good work in the BeadWORKS business.
