IL NGWESI ECO LODGE

Opened in 1996, the Il Ngwesi Eco Lodge has been the recipient of numerous eco- and community- tourism awards . It is owned and managed by the Laikipiak Maasi of the Il Ngwesi Group Ranch who will host your stay.

The Il Ngwesi Eco Lodge is set in the idyllic Mukogodo Hills adjacent the Ngare Ndare River. Constructed from local materials, the open-air design allows for stunning panoramic views. There are six individual ‘bandas’ or cottages, which all have adjoining outdoor showers. Two bandas include a platform in which the bed can roll out so guests can truly spend a night under the stars in comfort. Facilities also include a large sitting area where guests can enjoy meals and a swimming pool that drops out over the wilderness. Guests can often view game from the comfort of the lodge that overlooks a watering hole. Facilities at the lodge are run entirely on solar power.

There is a wide range of activities for guests to enjoy during their stay at Il Ngwesi Eco Lodge. Guests can choose to view wildlife from the comfort of a vehicle or choose to do so on foot with local guides. Many guests choose to visit the Il Ngwesi Rhino Sanctuary where the first black rhino was translocated to Il Ngwesi over thirty years ago. Other activities include hiking among the nearby hills or along the Ngare Ndare river, taking meals set-up ‘picnic’ style in the bush, bird watching or visiting the Maasi Cultural Manyatta where guests can learn more about the local community and their lifestyle.

Access to Il Ngwesi Lodge is by daily scheduled flights on SafariLink or Air Kenya from Nairobi Wilson Airport to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and a short road transfer to the lodge. Private charters are also available that can be booked directly to the Il Ngwesi airstrip. Access by 4x4 vehicle from Nairobi is through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and takes approximately five hours.
