Council of Elders
The majority of the local field leadership is comprised of individuals from the ethnically diverse pastoral communities, represented on the Council of Elders. Members of the Council of Elders are elected from the Community Conservancies, the local county councils, the Kenya Wildlife Service and the private sector. The Council reinforces the collective principles of the Northern Rangelands Trust among its members. Members are trained in legislation and are responsible for drawing up the by-laws for the operation and administration of the Trust.

The Council’s principal role is to ensure that the management approaches used by the Northern Rangelands Trust equitably distribute the benefits arising from conservation initiatives. It also approves fundraising proposals submitted by members and reviews applications from other institutions that wish to join the Trust. Through a process of peer review it guides the members in good governance on finance, community development and wildlife conservation.

The Council of Elders is comprised of up to 30 members of local communities and organisations. Each of the following member organisations/entities has the right to nominate a council representative.
